1. Sputum Preservative:

   Simple collection and preservation of DNA found in sputum at ambient temperature. Long-term stability of DNA at ambient temperature. DNA integrity is no longer a concern as Norgen’s sputum preservative ensures sample stability and is compatible with sensitive downstream molecular assays. This sample stability is crucial when samples must be collected in the field and shipped to a centralized laboratory for testing. The buffer eliminates the need to immediately process or freeze the samples, allowing their shipment at ambient temperature, thereby decreasing handling costs. Researchers now have an alternative for handling their precious sputum nucleic acid samples, which gives them peace of mind.
   

2. Sputum Liquifications:

   For ease of specimen handling; Complete liquification/homogenization of sputum samples is important for a number of reasons and can be achieved by the use of dithiothreitol (DTT). The DTT in Norgen’s Sputum Liquification Buffer acts to break the disulphide bonds in the mucin proteins, allowing cells to be released. Cells which are incompletely released from sputum tend to stain darkly, making their identification under the microscope difficult. Norgen’s Sputum Liquification Buffer is effective at dispersing cells and has no adverse affects on cell counts. Once homogenized, the sputum sample can also be more easily handled, the liquefied sputum being able to be centrifuged to concentrate the intact cells or alternatively to be used in nucleic acid isolation procedures. Norgen’s Sputum Liquification Buffer is compatible with nucleic acid isolation procedures and will not affect either the quality or quantity of the purified nuclic acids.
   

3. DNA Isolation from Sputum:

   Isolation of high-quality, inhibitor-free DNA; Norgen’s kits allow for the isolation and concentration of DNA present not only in the cells, but also cell-free DNA. The presence of this cell-free DNA can be used in the detection of inflammation, auto-immune disorders as well as various types of cancers. Sputum samples are typically evaluated to look for infections such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Moraxella catarrhalis, Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenza, among other pathogens. Sputum nucleic acids offer a highly sensitive method of the detection of these pathogens.
